Is this love – Whitesnake
‘Is This Love’ is the title track of a song by British-American rock band Whitesnake. The song was released in 1987 as the second single from their self-titled album.
The song was a hit for Whitesnake, reaching number nine in the UK Singles Chart, and number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, where it was overtaken by George Michael’s smash hit “Faith”. This made it their second-biggest US hit after “Here I Go Again,” which was number one. Whitesnake reissued the single in 1994 to promote their Greatest Hits. The UK Singles Chart listed this version at number 25.
Since 1987, Whitesnake has performed “Is This Love” in their live concerts. Consequently, it appears on several of their live albums, including Live: In the Shadow of the Blues (2006) and Live at Donington 1990 (2011). John Sykes performed it live in 2004 (Bad Boy Live!). Classic Rock magazine ranked it 7th on its Top 40 greatest power ballads list in 2015.
Background and writing
During the album’s early writing (which took place in the south of France), David Coverdale and John Sykes wrote the power ballad, but it was long rumored that the song was originally written for Tina Turner. In the booklet of Whitesnake’s 20th anniversary edition, Coverdale confirmed these rumours.
Before I’d left [for the south of France] a friend at EMI had asked me for any ideas that would work for Tina Turner. So that was where the original idea for “Is This Love” came from.
Coverdale claims that when David Geffen heard it, he was told to keep it, so he kept it for Whitesnake.
Music video
Tawny Kitaen, Coverdale’s ex-girlfriend, was featured in the song’s music video. Marty Callner directed the music video, which portrays the band playing the song on a misty stage while Coverdale sings and Kitaen dances. Coverdale fired the other members of the band before the album was released, so he is the only member of Whitesnake to appear in both the recording and music video. There were no music videos released for any songs from the 1987 album (except for “Here I Go Again”, in which Vandenberg played the guitar solo on the recording and later appeared in the music video).
Commercial performance
According to Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart, “Is This Love” reached number 13. Additionally, it reached number 38 on the Adult Contemporary chart in the US. Since its release, “Here I Go Again”, which did not chart on the AC chart at the time, has received more airplay on adult contemporary stations, most notably iHeartRadio stations.
Daria
It is said that the song was written for Tina Turner. This song could very well have been written for Daria had she not been born in 1994. She sings the song perfectly, and it fits her perfectly.
