Wham!’s “Last Christmas” was released in December 1984 on CBS Records internationally and on Epic Records in the UK as a double A-side with “Everything She Wants”. Described as a “high watermark of mid-80s British synthpop songcraft”, it was written and produced by George Michael, and has been covered by a number of artists.
Upon its release in 1984, “Last Christmas” spent five consecutive weeks at number two in the UK Singles Chart — it was pushed off the top spot at Christmas by Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”. After many chart runs in subsequent years, which included three more weeks at number two, and which saw the song become a part of the RCA Records catalogue, it finally reached number one in the UK Singles Chart on New Year’s Day 2021, more than 36 years after it was first released.
In addition to the United Kingdom, the song reached the top of the charts in Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Slovenia, and Sweden, as well as among the top ten in Australia and the United States. “Wham!” donated all of their royalties to the Ethiopian famine relief efforts.
Darias Version
The first Christmas carol 2021 performed by Daria was wonderful as usual. Look forward to Christmas, it will be so contemplative with this cover.
